APCC appoints new Executive Director PDF Print E-mail
LuaThe Asia Pacific Cultural Center (APCC) has recently appointed Faaluaina (Lua) Pritchard as its new Executive Director, replacing Art Cruz, who resigned due to health reasons.  Prior to becoming executive director, Lua had also served as president of the center, which is the only one of its kind in Washington State.

Faaluaina (Lua) Pritchard is a Commissioner of the Washington State Commission on Asian Pacific American Affairs and previously served as the Executive Director of the Korean Women's Association, an organization which she was a part of for almost 20 years, since early 1990.  She hails from American Samoa where she worked as a Program Administrator and a Secondary English Teacher for the American Samoa Department of Education for twelve years. Pritchard has extensive training in various areas of social service and non-profit management and over 25 years of experience in grant writing and fundraising. She also serves as Chair to the Pierce County Asian Pacific Island Coalition, Board Member of the National Coalition for Asian Pacific American Community Development, Board Member of the Department of Health and Human Services Refugee Advisory Council, Board Member of the Governor Interagency Council on Health Disparity, and Board Member of the Breast Cancer Resource Center.

In addition to management, grant writing, and fund raising, Lua has an extensive background in strategic planning, marketing, multiple communities building, nutrition education, teacher training, and secondary education instruction. She was educated by Pepperdine University in California, University of Hawaii in Oahu, and the University of Minnesota.

Replacing Lua as APCC president is Patsy Surh O’Connell, an arts professor who is the founder of the organization.  Also serving on the APCC board are: vice president Gideon Epistola; secretary Al Cosio; treasurer Francisco Pascua, Jr.; and board members Chico Mageo, Sinoun Hem, Lisa Hoffman, Chito PeBenito, Eun Backstrom, and Anita Walia.

With Patsy’s steady stewardship and Lua’s inspiring and pro-active leadership, the APCC is expected to continue to grow significantly in the coming years in terms of its membership, programs, and budget.   This year, its four major events are the Asia Pacific Islander American New Year’s Celebration held last February at the Tacoma Dome, Asia Pacific American Heritage Festival on May 15 & 16 at the Fircrest Community Center, Polynesian Luau on August 14 at the Boys and Girls Club in Lakewood, and the Cultural Arts Exhibition on November 27 & 28 at the Tacoma Dome.

One of APCC’ s  primary goals is to acquire a modern facility that will offer office space and meeting venue for the various Asia Pacific Islander groups in Washington State.

The APCC, a 501 (C) (3) non-profit organization, was formed in November 1996 from the vision of a small group of citizens representing three generations of Americans of Asian and Pacific Islanders heritage.  APCC represents 47 countries and cultures, offering programs and services honoring their distinct artistry, business protocols, history and social practices.  To learn more, contact the APPC office at 253.383.3900.
